Just a quick one...

It has once again been a long time since I updated. I've never really done anything to give this site a nice format or actually share it with people like I might have wanted once upon a time. Recently I found an old-internet style blogging site that might be easier for me to update more regularly.

Much has happened! Yesterday I completed the first draft of my big urban-rural SFF whatsit that I've had floating around in my head in some form for the last 9 years, and this is the first time the entire story has been written from beginning to end. I can't make any promises about its coherence but its completion alone is something to be proud of. I think my other novel (alt-hist fantasy romance) is better simply because it's less convoluted, but regardless, that's two novels I can say I have a first draft of. I don't feel like I have a lot to be proud of in life- not that one should need that to feel content with oneself!- but it does make me happy to think that my ridiculous hyperfocusing is at least good for something creative.

I told myself that when I was done, I'd sit and learn some of this HTML/CSS styling stuff so I could make a website to share my work in a kind of ARG format (without much actual game-playing, just lore/worldbuilding). Now I'm done I just want to keep writing, whether it's redrafting either of these two stories or new ideas that have come to me! So I need to make a decision.

I find myself at... a life branching point, and those skills could potentially be useful in other areas of life. I also want to get back into coding in general because apart from writing, it's what my mind is best suited to.

As for what else I do for fun, I find I've read more books this year (~65) than any year since I started counting using apps in 2020. My drawer of books has been continually full all year until the last week or so. I wanted to reread more and get more library books in 2024... that didn't happen... but I must try in 2025, for lack of space for new books if nothing else!

I also listened to about 125 albums and EPs, which sounds like a lot, but I still don't feel like I can properly define my taste or have caught up with Everyone Else On The Internet who have already listened to Every Album Ever. It doesn't help that I tend to fixate on the entire discography of a narrow range of artists and bands and just listen to the same things over and over again. Anyway, next year I get to see my favourite band on tour, and possibly another I really like if they announce one. This year we saw a band whose discography I 'revised' before seeing them and came to really like as a result- it helped that they were genre-adjacent to a couple of other bands I was listening to a lot. I also became a fan of their support act who are flying below the radar a bit, and I'm looking forward to their new album because the singles have been great. (I don't know why I'm so non-specific about these bands, I suppose it's still something I struggle to publicly identify with because it tends to attract more judgement than any other media for some reason?)

I might be getting back into gaming a little bit, mostly visual novels as I've said previously, particularly replaying the entire Ace Attorney series from the beginning. I'm currently on the third game and really reappreciating how these stories are at the pinnacle of their medium. There was a case in the second game that really resonated with me in a way it had never done before because of where I am in life now.

So I'm not sure if I'll update this site much in future, but if I start a different blog I will post the link here for the sake of continuity.
